December Art Wall: New Paintings by Bettye Barclay

The Opening Reception for Bettye Barclay’s exhibit, New Paintings, will be held at UU Santa Monica on Sunday, December 1 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Come chat with the artist. At the reception, fused glass and jewelry by Bettye will also be available. Light snacks will be provided.

In Bettye’s own words: “In my painting I move between images and abstraction. Images can evoke a memory of experience, an idea or dream. Abstract shapes lead us into the unknown, a place before appearance of an image.

“In my work I enjoy the dance between abstraction and images and the different qualities and potential that each brings to the process of painting. And I love color, the ways color can speak to the senses in deep and mysterious ways. My love of color is a constant whether images, shapes or abstraction appear in the paintings.

“My paintings are an attempt to express the wholeness of life that is constantly in flux. The tension of the call to new life, the human desire for stasis, and the way life demands movement are ongoing themes. My search is to define and express these tensions and to explore the invisible aspects of being through color, form and balance.

“In painting, as in life, the search for balance and the dis-equilibrium that leads to a point where balance shifts and some new aspect is born into being is an ongoing process.”

The exhibit will be open every Sunday from 9:00 am until 12:00 noon and on weekdays by appointment through December 29. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
