UUSM’s Common Read will hold its first meeting of the year on Saturday, October 12, from 10:30 am until noon in Forbes Hall to discuss this year’s book, “On Repentance and Repair – Making Amends in an Unapologetic World” by Danya Ruttenberg. The discussion will be facilitated by Judith Martin-Straw and James Witker of the Adult Programs Committee.
The book is available as an e-book OR an audio book from the LA Public Library, and hardcover copies can be purchased at independent bookstores. We encourage you to get a copy and read it (or listen) before the meeting so we can discuss it’s message and our reactions.
Noted as “a crucial new lens on repentance, atonement, forgiveness, and repair from harm,” these are all facets of our own personal challenges with current cultural issues.
Anyone might carry a grudge; what do you do when it becomes too heavy? Maybe you have done something to a friend or family member that has provoked their anger, or ended the relationship? Who should apologize, and who benefits? Beginning with the teachings of Maimonides, Ruttenberg offers some very clear and insightful concepts and practices in considering who, and how, to forgive.
We will hope to see you there.
