On Saturday, August 16, after our usual Soulful Sundown potluck, UUSM community members shared their talents in a friendly Open Mic event. A nice crowd was on hand.
Vicki got things started, singing a sentimental love song a capella.

Then the kids came on.

First there was a guessing game in which a story was told without naming a name, and we had to guess who the narrator was. Rapunzel was the answer.

Then, after having someone scramble it, our next performer solved a Rubik’s cube in real time, rather swiftly, right there in front of god and everybody.

Then Larry did a stand-up routine, which he’d done before, but he said he wanted to repeat it in case any of us missed it the first time.

Meanwhile, people were talking and eating and drinking and having a good time.

But some quiet small conversations also took place.

Will stood up to sing and paused thoughtfully – soulfully, in fact – for a few moments. We waited quietly…and then he began “In My Life.”

At one point, Will did not remember the lyrics, so all of us helped by picking up the song and singing along with him. We all finished the tune together.
Next, Kirk and Natalie did a demo of physical training devices, aided by the kids.

And Natalie did her amazing One-Minute Plank. Whew!

Irina shared some of her poems, in which roses emerged as a theme.

And Tom sang “Sweet Baby James,” with Karl on guitar.

Finally, Karl and his good friend Eric rocked out a bit with “Six Days on the Road.”

And Karl offered a tribute to Johnny Canales – Chuck Berry’s “Bye Bye Johnny” – which recognized that Johnny was unable to attend, remaining at home to deal with fallout from chemotherapy.

Much pizza and salad and chicken was eaten, talking enjoyed and acquaintances made, and by the time it was over, a good time was had by all.
Cheers!
