Notes from the UUSM Animal Ministry

UUSM Animal Ministry

Do you care about animals and a world that includes all beings? Are you into wildlife, companion animals, farm animals, ethical eating, donating to your favorite animal charity, volunteering at shelters or rescues, saving endangered species, or protecting ecosystems? You’ve found a group of kindred spirits here.

The Unitarian Universalist Animal Ministry has been around since 1986. Currently, there are 45 chapters across the country. We are a group of concerned Unitarian Universalists who desire to express our faith through our compassion towards all beings.

Join us to explore a more humane lifestyle, focusing on such matters as ethical consumerism, plant-based eating, the use of cruelty-free products, and the development of alternatives to the use of animals in research and product testing. We come together to advance compassion for all beings through activities such as our monthly pet food donation drive for local pet food pantries and to educate our fellowship about what we can do to help all animals.

Pet Food Donations: Bring us your pet food donations. We accept contributions of pet food to the LA Animal Services Pet Food Pantry, assisting low-income families and individuals experiencing financial hardship who need help feeding their animal companions. Bring your unwanted, unopened cat and dog food, and unused toys or buy some to donate. Place your donations any Sunday in the decorated Pet Food Donation box located in the anteroom of the Sanctuary.

National UU Animal Ministry Pet Loss Support Group via Zoom: Losing a beloved animal companion is never easy. You don’t have to grieve alone. The UU Animal Ministry Pet Loss Support Group, led by UUAM Chaplain Rev. Russell Elleven, offers a compassionate space to share and heal. Topics have included stages of grief, grief resources, book suggestions, rituals, and mourning, with many others. Whether you are facing the loss of a pet now or mourning one who has passed, you’ll find comfort and connection here. This online group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 5 PM PST. The main link to all the information is at www.animalchaplain.net. Email relleven@uuma.org to get the Zoom link and passcode. If you ever need any help at all, please email animalministry@uusm.org.

Are you going to cater a meal at UUSM or bring food for a potluck? We’ve put together an up-to-date list of some options: Affordable Plant-Based Food Options Near UUSM.

UUSM Animal Ministry group meets once per month to chat, discuss animal welfare topics for congregational meetings, and to organize tabling after the Sunday services.
