January & February Art Wall: Tom Milton Peters

Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Santa Monica is pleased to feature works by our very own Tom Peters on our Art Wall during the months of January and February. The exhibit includes photographs and paintings that document his encounters with the natural and built environment.

The therapeutic, meditative and timeless state of mind I find myself in working on individual art pieces or projects that may or may not become worthy of someone’s attention drives me from one project to another.

Projects from 2004 to 2008 were photographs of the ground on the Venice Walk or Santa Monica Beach and later on the streets of Santa Monica. I see art all around me and make sure I’m out in the world to honor and share its beauty. From 2011 to 2015, I photographed the seashore at low tide.

In 2016, I painted a series of geometric forms representing memories and thoughts. This painting project started with a thought on August 1, 2016. By the end of the month I had finished several large paintings. A flash of time, focused in a whirlwind of therapeutic activity.

Projects come and go; since retiring I read constantly, waiting for the next spark of a project to immerse myself into.

Please join us at a second reception for the artist to be held after our worship service on Sunday, February 2, 2025, in Forbes Hall. The reception is free and open to the public, and the artist is donating 100% of his profits to support our congregation.

The exhibit is available to view on Sunday mornings after 10:00 am and by appointment until February 27, 2025. For all inquiries, please contact our Art Committee.
