From Our DRE

Here’s news about what’s coming up for Children & Youth RE this Sunday and beyond.

All ages are welcome at our Witchy Halloween Party on Saturday, November 1st, to learn more about Samhain and enjoy friends, food, and fun.

Our program is growing. Starting in September, we will have three CYRE classes – Beginners, Middle Grades, and High School RE.

Whether you are a long-time or new volunteer, a parent, member, or newcomer to UUSM who wants to learn more about CYRE, we will be holding Volunteer Training Sessions on August 24th and 27th.

Nelson Mandala’s words provide a useful definition of freedom for us to explore in RE this month: “To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

This month our kids will begin our unit on imagination with “Using Imagination to Have Fun.” The next weeks will be about finding hope, thinking outside the box, and understanding.

Practicing joy is about refusing to give up on life, to make time for things that remind us why life, freedom, and justice are worth fighting for. It will keep our hearts alive.

There is wisdom in holding our trust back when people or institutions display untrustworthiness. But trust is a spiritual practice that can help us find truth, meaning, and love.

What I want to talk about is how we will respond to fearmongering and dangerous threats against LGBTQ+ children and youth. We can make the world a better place for all kids.

While the expert who has studied a certain topic for many years certainly has important knowledge that should not be devalued, a beginner brings something to the table that the expert cannot – a fresh pair of eyes.
