Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Santa Monica will exhibit works by the American artist Jane Lilienthal (1914-1983) on its Art Wall during the months of April and May. An opening reception will be held after our worship service on Sunday, April 7, 2023, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm in Forbes Hall. The reception is free and open to the public, and the artist’s daughter will donate a percentage of the profits to support our congregation.
Jane Roth was born in Chicago and raised in Memphis. She attended the Memphis Academy of Art from 1924 to 1937. After her marriage in 1938 to Allen Lilienthal she moved to Mississippi and later to the West Coast, where she continued her studies in the San Francisco Bay area. Her early work shows the influence of WPA-era regionalism. After World War II, she embraced abstraction. Jane’s daughter, Nancy Lilienthal, manages her mother’s collection today.
