On May 16, the Poor People’s Campaign will hold a major regional event in downtown Los Angeles. Co-chaired by Rev. Drs. Liz Theoharis and William Barber II, the PPC continues its visionary work to build an interracial, intergenerational movement against poverty, racism and all forms of bigotry, environmental degradation, and militarism.
This march and others around the country are building support for a larger event in Washington, D.C., on June 18.
Several years ago, the FIA Peace & Social Justice Committee and Adult RE hosted a study group on Rev. Dr. Barber’s “The Third Reconstruction: How a Moral Movement is Overcoming the Politics of Division and Fear,” which was the UUA Common Read for 2016-2017. Barber also rallied UUs at the 2016 UU General Assembly with his vision for an interfaith, radically inclusive movement for justice to finish the work of repair and reconciliation — started after the Civil War and continued by Dr. King — that is still painfully unfinished.
The PSJ Committee hopes that UUSM members and friends will join us on Monday, May 16 to carpool (or take the train) to the march. More detailed information will follow. Everyone is always invited to attend Peace & Social Justice Committee meetings on third Sundays at Noon.
