August 2021 Worship Services at 10:30 am

For all of July and August, we are participating in GLAM’s* Virtual SUUmmer Road Trip, which is taking us to worship in UU congregations across Greater Los Angeles. These services occur at 10:30 am (please note the new time) and can be accessed through Zoom each week.

Following each service, we are gathering with all of the other UUs present for a common Zoom coffee hour with breakout rooms to allow us to get to know our neighbors better. It’s interesting and fun!

Our GLAM Virtual SUUmmer Road Trip not only gives our staff and worship leaders a much needed break, but it also allows us to learn from our sibling congregations and to forge relationships across our congregations.

We plan to return to our sanctuary on Sunday, September 5th.

8/1/21 UU Community Church of Santa Monica Rev. Kikanza Nuri-Robins, with Worship Associate Cassie Winters Right on the Edge…  Are you on the edge of something wonderful? Or are you right on the edge of an abyss of some sort? Let’s consider what it takes for us to live on the edge, and what we gain when we let ourselves step into the unknown.

8/8/21 Neighborhood UU Church Rev. Dr. Terasa Cooley, with Matt Vasko and Wells Leng For Goodness Sake. We don’t seem to talk about goodness these days as much as we criticize those whom we think are bad. The wild popularity of the tv series “Ted Lasso” suggests that we are in fact in search of goodness. Rev Terasa will explore this phenomenon and other archetypes like him that provide something much needed in times of crisis.

8/22/21 UU Church of the Verdugo Hills Rev. KC Slack A Better Story. It is easy to get stuck inside the stories we tell about ourselves, our community, and our world. As Unitarian Universalists, however, we believe that the future is open and not-yet-written. How do we break free from stories which are limiting and learn to live into the possibilities of what could be
8/29/21 UU Community Church of Santa Monica Rev. Jeremiah Kalendae, with Worship Associate Aubrey Sassoon Spiritual Home. Our beloved communities are places of refuge, belonging, and hospitality. We’ve spent this summer enlarging our spiritual homes to embrace our neighboring Unitarian Universalist communities and now we prepare to return to our home communities. What does it mean for us to return to our spiritual homes in this unprecedented time of pandemic and societal strife? How might we arrive at home within ourselves as we create beloved community together?

August Generous Congregation: Tonality (August 1) and the UUA Disaster Relief Fund

Our practice here at UUSM is to dedicate half of our non-pledge Sunday offerings to organizations doing work in the world that advances our Unitarian Universalist principles; the other 50% of the offering is used to support the life of our church.

TOur collection on August 1 will help support Tonality, a Los Angeles-based vocal ensemble whose mission is to deliver authentic stories through voice and body to incite change, understanding, and dialogue. Our current music director, Saunder Choi, and our past music director, Zanaida Robles, are members of this award-winning choral group. Tonality performs a variety of pieces in various languages and musical styles in an effort to unify our community through social outreach and serve as a beacon of peace, empathy and justice.

Fifty percent of the remainder of the month’s offerings to UUSM (August 7-28) will go to support the UUA Disaster Relief Fund. Disasters impact our congregations and their communities with increasing rapidity. From natural disasters like wildfires and floods to human-caused calamities, UU congregations, their members, and their community partners bear the impacts. By aiding other congregations, we act through our faith and values. Donations from across the nation allow the national organization to respond quickly and flexibly.

Thank you for your generous support of this beloved community, Tonality and the UUA Disaster Relief Fund. To give $10 right now, text “$10 GCC” (or another amount) to 844-982-0209. (One-time-only credit card registration required.) Or visit uusm.org/make-a-donation.

Our service in the world continues.
