Rabbi Shira Freidlin, guest speaker; Rebecca Haggerty, worship associate. Come join Rabbi Shira Freidlin from the Santa Monica Synagogue as she shares with us the Jewish practice of chanting nigunim. A nigun is a wordless melody that is traditionally repeated over and over again in a desire to bring us into closer connection with our inner selves, each other, and the Divine. Please come with an open heart and a willingness to sing! Join us in-person or online.

Cowpoke attire is encouraged, Western Bandanas will be provided. This is a summer fun event featuring flavors of the West - Barbecue beef, barbecued chicken tenders, Vegan Chili, cowpoke potatoes, broasted potatoes, coleslaw, corn on the cob, green beans, fresh fruit, and dinner rolls. Desserts will feature Strawberry Shortcake or Hot Fudge Brownie Sundaes. Buy your tickets at the door: Adult $25 each, Teens (ages 11-18) $10 each, and Children (ages 6 - 11) $5 each. Cooking is an endless project. Finding ways to feed ourselves that meet our needs (and wants!) can be an ongoing research project, a source of unlimited experimentation. This Sunday, church members Amy and Bruno Lacombe will be sharing some of their favorite vegan recipes, and offering some tasty samples. Join us in Forbes Hall at 1 pm for a few delicious hours, and take home some ideas on how to expand your repertoire in the kitchen. The Rev. James Ishmael Ford, guest speaker; Chela Metzger, worship associate. Our old friend, The Rev. James Ishmael Ford, first read the Grapes of Wrath when he was a teenager. Its deeper messages have never left him. The story of the Joad family was first recounted by John Steinbeck in his novel. The spirit of that novel was captured by John Ford in his adaptation for the screen. And then it was summarized in a haunting song by Woody Guthrie. James feels this Labor Day weekend is a good time to revisit some aspects of that message. Rev. James is our 2024-2025 Honored Guest Teacher. Each year of Developmental Ministry, we've had one special Honored Guest Teacher who has deepened our understanding and commitments to multi-religious life and/or anti-racism and anti-oppression.
