The Committee for Racial Justice (CRJ) invites the community to our October 5th workshop on zoom, Understanding White Nationalism & Its Impact Today. CRJ feels the need to address how white nationalist ideologies, once confined to fringe movements, have become more visible in mainstream discourse and politics. A panel of experts will explore the historical roots of white nationalism, tracing its evolution from post-Reconstruction policies through the Civil Rights backlash to the present day. The session will connect these legacies to current issues in public safety (e.g., hate crimes, extremist recruitment), education (e.g., curriculum bans, book challenges, anti-DEI legislation), and racial equity (e.g., systemic barriers reinforced by coded policy shifts).
This CRJ workshop will also emphasize strategies for building community resilience against extremist threats, fostering allyship across diverse groups, and engaging in advocacy efforts that counter misinformation and polarization. Attendees will leave with concrete tools to recognize and resist white nationalist narratives in their schools, workplaces, and civic institutions.
Speakers
Professor Christiana Littlefield – Scholar and associate professor with a dual appointment in religion and journalism at Pepperdine University with expertise in race, power, and systemic inequities. She will ground the discussion in the historical continuities of white nationalism and how it shapes today’s policy battles. Her second book is entitled Christian America and the Kingdom of God: White Christian Nationalism from the Puritans through January 6, 2021.
Cashauna Hill – Executive Director of The Redress Movement, is a civil rights attorney and advocate focusing on housing and economic justice and has written extensively about housing segregation and civil rights. She will highlight how white nationalist ideology manifests in housing policy, displacement, and inequitable resource allocation.
Professor Tim Conley – Filmmaker and a professor, teaching in the Africana Studies Department at California State University, Northridge and the Communication & Media Studies, and Business Departments at Santa Monica College. He is an expert in communication, politics, and extremism studies. He will address modern extremist recruitment strategies, media narratives, and the role of disinformation in spreading white nationalist thought.
Each speaker will bring a unique lens, helping participants connect the dots between history, present-day realities, and actionable community responses.
There will be time for Q & A.
