Here are some updates on several of the professional UUSM Staff that make our Sunday worship special and support our thriving community.
Saunder Choi, our beloved Director of Music, has announced that he will be leaving to become DOM at Neighborhood UU Church in Pasadena. In the 8 years that he has been with us, Saunder has led the choir and section leaders with enthusiasm and brought diverse music to our Sunday worship. During the pandemic, he was instrumental in our ability to transition quickly to online worship due to his technical and musical expertise. Serving the Neighborhood UU Church will be a wonderful opportunity for him and, of course, we wish him well on his new endeavor. Please consider joining us this upcoming Sunday, July 19, which will be Saunder’s last Sunday service with us, when we will wish him a very fond farewell. Be assured that music will continue to be an important facet of our service worship. Our current plan is to quickly appoint an Interim Music Director, then, in the fall, we will conduct an official DOM search that will involve representatives of the Board, members of the Music Committee, and Rev. Diana.
Jessica TenHave-Place, our adored Director of Religious Education, is currently on temporary leave until August. We are sad that she has not been able to be with us during this time – the kids have told us that they certainly miss her. In her absence, member Maddie Van Beek has been wonderful serving as a valuable lead for CYRE over the summer. We are fortunate to have talented and devoted members who have quickly stepped in to support our incredible children’s program.
It’s tough to announce a departure (and absence) considering that we just said goodbye to Rev. Jeremiah and Rev. Kikanza. Still, we are blessed to be transitioning into settled ministry with Rev. Diana shortly – she joins us on August 7. She will help provide leadership as we usher into this next phase of ministry in our community, including our precious music program.
With Love and Appreciation,
Vilma Ortiz
President, UUSM Congregation
