September and October Art Wall: Bettye Barclay

UUSM welcomes Bettye Barclay back to the Art Wall during the months of September and October with her show entitled Seasons: in Art, Life and Nature. This exhibit is a combination of new paintings and a retrospective of work shown at UUSM since Bettye was first invited to show her Mandala paintings in 2007.

I have worked in mediums including clay, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, silk painting and fused glass.

I have long been intrigued by the tensions present in the search for balance between various aspects of life. I have an acute awareness of endings, gestations, and new beginnings. I think of these experiences as the cycles of death and rebirth that occur throughout life.

With art my search is to define and express these tensions, to explore aspects of life through color, form and balance.

The ongoing play between desire for balance and the urge to move into the unknown intrigues me. Accepting a call to a new aspect of life or art requires living into disequilibrium. This leads to the point where balance shifts and some previously unknown aspect is born into being.

During the 1980s and 1990s my dual life as a psychotherapist and artist filled my life with a sense of meaning and purpose and offered much satisfaction. Since my professional retirement in 2004 my work with art offers ongoing pleasure.

Bettye’s clay and paintings have received numerous awards both locally and nationally and are in collections in Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, Korea and in the U.S.

Two receptions will take place following the service on Sunday, September 6, and Sunday, October 4, in Forbes Hall. We hope you will stop by to enjoy Bettye’s work.
