From Our President: Transitions and New Beginnings

Vilma Ortiz, 2025-27 Board President

As summer comes to an end, I’m reflecting on our church summer. Church summers are usually low-key as our minister takes a break and we host guest speakers. This summer was not low-key! We said goodbye to Rev. Jeremiah, our developmental minister, and to Rev. Kikanza, our consulting minister, and welcomed Rev. Diana, our new settled minister. And to keep things even more exciting, we also said goodbye to Saunder, our music director, and Jessica, our director of religious exploration.

It was a lot of change and some of you shared your sadness about the changes. I agree — it was sad to witness these departures and transitions. Still, I was impressed by how we maintained a sense of calmness through it all. I noted a lot of trust among us as we move forward to a new ministry, searches for music and religious education staff, and welcoming new folks into our community. I know we’ll be ok as we move forward.

This church year promises to be exciting. Next Sunday, September 13, will be a time to gather again, welcome Rev. Diana, and learn about our community. Following the service, we’re hosting an Opportunities Fair where you can meet the people behind our groups, find your place, and see how you can grow with UUSM. Appetizers and small plates will be served. Committee chairs and members will be on hand to chat about what they do and how it all fits together. It’s a chance to get to know the congregation better and enjoy each other. I look forward to seeing you there!

You may notice a little disorganization in the offices this coming Sunday. We are installing a new HVAC system. The offices had become so hot that it was hazardous — not surprising considering the 97-year-age of our building and global warming. Brad Hutchinson and the rest of the facilities team led this effort and it’s now happening competently and quickly.

Every week, I’m grateful to everyone who make our Sundays special. From the greeters, ushers, coffee folks, sextons, child minders, parking attendants, to the welcome table folks, worship associate, musicians, speakers, it’s impressive what we do!
