Announcing the Accessibility Committee

Accessibility Sign

A new and timely committee has formed at UUSM, the Accessibility Committee, which concerns itself with exactly that: making our church and its activities equally accessible to all. Credit Melinda Ewen for getting it started and recruiting Dan Patterson, Linda VanLigten, Cathie Gentile and Karl Lisovsky as members.

You may have noticed, for example, the caution tape on the steps from Forbes to the Sanctuary, a detail suggested to us by a congregant.

While the demand is low for large-print orders of service, every Sunday a couple of people take one, now that it is known that they are available.  Have you noticed the discreet informational on the greeters’ table and at the entrance to the sanctuary? These signs also alerts congregants that hearing assist devices are available, as well as large-print orders of service.  Our ushers are available to help.

Finally, the Committee is working on getting closed captions displayed regularly onscreen in broadcasts of our worship services.  That is, congregants should be able to access the cc benefit when hearing/viewing the worship service in Forbes Hall, as well as at home.  We will continue our efforts to keep this practice happening automatically.

Please email us at accessibility@uusm.org if you have questions or suggestions.
